//You, Me, Us, We//

“The joy of moving, of making creative choices and building relationships, of being an equal member of a diverse community should be available to everybody.” – Alito Alessi

After exploring our own internal worlds and our unique voice as movers, we will expand our perception to the external – what is happening around us? Improvising anchors us in the present moment, and through our choice making, we will find new ways to relate to the community we create together, one that is open to everyone. By activating our kinesthetic empathy we will discover new ways of moving and being in relationship.

Elements is an on-going class in which we study dance and movement improvisation as well as somatics. DanceAbility is our foundational method with which we work to ensure inclusion. It is an equal collaboration and learning environment for every ‘body’ regardless of unique physical or mental characteristics. No gym membership is required to attend. Open to adults age 18 and up; all abilities and experience levels. No registration necessary and fee for class is on a sliding scale from $5-$20, cash or check accepted. See you at the Y!

Teacher bio: Dany Casey is a mover and shaker based in Austin, TX. She earned her B.A. in Dance from the New School University (NYC), and bounced around the country before landing here 11 years ago. After working at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, she became wildly interested in accessibility and the unique perspectives and experience gained by a diverse and inclusive population. For her, the DanceAbility methodology is the perfect marriage of movement, inclusion, collaboration, creativity, and teaching. She has performed with BodyShift in the Austin Dance Festival (2018), On Display (2017), Your Way of Thinking (2016), and others. She has also performed dances in tunnels, parking garages, on scaffolding, atop bookshelves, on the steps of city hall, a few theatres, and many other strange places with a myriad of wonderful choreographers here.

Dany loves to persistently explore new possibilities with others, and has found that through working in groups where there is sensory diversity, one can open doors of perception that would otherwise be invisible. In addition to being a dancer and DanceAbility Instructor, she is also a recently certified American Sign Language Interpreter. She looks forward to moving with you in class!
