Body Shift is a mixed ability dance project
We are happy to announce that our project coordinator, Olivia O'Hare, and lead instructor, Silva Laukkanen, will be heading to NYC next week for the national convening on the future of integrated dance in the US hosted by Axis Dance Company at Gibney Dance Center. The convening will bring leaders in the field of mixed-ability dance together from all over the country with keynote speaker Jo Verrent from the UK to share ideas about how to effectively bring dance to all people. Silva and Olivia look forward to sharing what they learn with the community here in Austin!
Check out the document that was generated from last year's convening in Dance/NYC's newest research, Disability. Dance. Artistry., which is informed by conversations emanating from the July 8, 2015 convening of experts in the field of mixed-ability dance at John Jay College. The new report is a call to action for a cultural ecosystem that expressly and equitably includes the disability community. In the forward by disability advocate, Simi Linton asks, "Are we here to foster social change or here to foster artistic change?" She provides insight into how we can encourage a shift in perception and practice that does both. Visit Dance. Disability. Artistry to access the report.
In Body Shift’s latest performance, Your Way Of Thinking, we will take to the streets once again to showcase our unique way of bringing people of all abilities together to dance and have fun. For six years now VSA Texas and Forklift Danceworks have nurtured this collaborative project in an effort to shift the Austin communities’ idea of what dance looks like and who can be a dancer. Under the direction of Olivia O’Hare a group of 12 local dancers and actors with and without disabilities will use structured improvisation and the DanceAbility method to create choreography in the moment.
